ITINERARY
We start the day by driving south for about 30 minutes, to the town of Marcara, and then east towards the village of Vicos. Continuing through the Honda and Paccharuri Valleys, we’ll observe imposing canyon walls and dense native Andean vegetation, as well as various cascading waterfalls. The Rocotuyoc Lake (4,450m.) and the little frozen Lake are located at the top of Paccharuri Canyon, one behind the other. The lake closest to the glacial cirque is dotted with small icebergs and surrounded by a spectacular view of mountains, ice, and blue sky. We will hike from Rocotuyoc Lake to Frozen Lake for about one hour, following a remarkable trail that includes a short passage over a glacier moraine. We’ll pause for photos and a brief respite before returning to the first lake by the same path. Very close to these lakes, we will observe the Llamaruri cave paintings; these paintings are a record reflecting the number of llamas that belonged to the pre-Inca culture that dwelt in this region. Return to Huaraz City.
